The Transport Ministry will soon require at least 20% of pilots hired by commercial airlines to be Thai nationals, Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith says.
“another form of protectionism… Is all that in accordance with the spirit of ASEAN? My son graduated from the Hua Hin Training Center (multiple engine license) but never got a job here because he was not Thai national. We bought an empty box of almost 2 million Baht!!! That was the biggest govenrmental scam that we ever encountered in 25 years of residence. Welcome to Thailand and don’t forget to leave your money!”
“There is a world-wide shortage of flight crews due to massive increase in travel in Asia. Government training centers are essential but the graduates should be made to work for that Government for a limited period (to get their moneys worth) before releasing them to commerce. As noted above, fluent English is an essential BEFORE they start their training so Thailand has a big problem, again.”
“May I inform you that the Thai license is only valid in Thailand. No other country, perhaps with the exception fo some banana states, accept this license. That’s why my son, after having graduated from Hua Hin Training Center had to move to Los Angeles and subscribe a whole new trainig session to have an internationally recognized multiple-engine license. No wonder carriers prefer to recruit other licenses (non-Thais) for their flights, and they know why! Domestic flights MUST be Thai pilots, not international flights.”
