THAILAND: Villagers’ perseverance paying off in mining battle

Something extraordinary happened on Tuesday at Government House. No, it was nothing to do with the last cabinet meeting before Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha left for the UN meeting in New York. Rather, it was about ordinary people making their voices heard at the most powerful seat of government. Several hundred people arrived with numerous documents to register their opposition to the government’s plans for mining, in particular gold mining.
