Politician ‘involved in elephant case’

Parks chief Damrong probes smuggling bid

A nearby politician, a businessman and neighborhood authorities have been powering the failed effort to smuggle a younger feminine elephant from Pachi River Wildlife Sanctuary in the province, states the nationwide parks chief.

Damrong Pidech, chief of the Office of Countrywide Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, yesterday paid a pay a visit to to the 5-yr-previous elephant that was confiscated from a group of Karen poachers on Tuesday.

The Karen were allegedly using the youthful elephant to be marketed to an elephant farm when rangers located them in the forest. The patrol team exchanged gunfire with the poachers. A single Karenni was killed.

Mr Damrong mentioned a politician in Kanchanaburi and a wealthy businessman in Saraburi had worked carefully with officials in Ratchaburi province to smuggle the young jumbo, but to no avail.

He also mentioned an ethnic Karen police officer is a crucial coordinator for the ring. The policeman “received an buy for younger elephants from farms and prepare for a poaching group to go catch them”, he stated.
