Prawase says floods due to deforestation (Thailand)

The catastrophic flooding has shown the country is out of sync in its natural environment and national administration, social thinker Prawase Wasi says.

In a discussion on the national crisis in Khon Kaen recently, Dr Prawase said flooding had worsened in Thailand over the years because forest areas in the country had shrunk from more than 60% of its surface area or about 513,000 square kilometres five decades ago, to only 20% now.

The remaining forests are not enough to maintain the balance of water in the country during the rainy and dry seasons.

Dr Prawase said forests had to make up half of the total area of the country to keep the natural balance intact.
