City Hall lowers opened sluice gate (Bangkok)

City Hall lowered the Khlong Phraya Suren sluice gate to one metre on Monday after the gate was opened by local residents to about 1.5 metres on Sunday night.

Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said the unauthorised opening of the gate to 1.50 metres caused the water level in inundated areas behind the gate to rise by 3 cm.

Those flooded areas in Sai Mai and Bang Khen districts, which are impassable to small vehicles, have about 4,500 households with 37,000 residents, said the governor.

To minimise the impact on the two Bangkok districts, he had ordered the gate be lowered to its normal level of one metre.
